Cleveland vice president of operations Sashi Brown said they didn’t intentionally disrupt the planned trade with the Bengals for quarterback AJ McCarron.

In an interview with reporters, he said people in the know—including coach Hue Jackson—understand that they tried to do everything to get the deal done. On rumors that he was responsible for the botched trade, he said, “I am not worried about that internally. Externally, I can just put it to bed. That is just not the case.”

The rumor about Brown’s imprint on the failed deal was reported a couple of days ago. The Browns and Bengals have agreed to send McCarron to Cleveland for a second-round and third-round pick. However, the executive failed to submit the required documents before the deadline at 4 p.m. ET last Tuesday.

Apparently, Brown and Jackson are not seeing eye-to-eye on a number of decisions, and everybody in the league knew the tension between the two. The Browns coach, meanwhile, was very familiar with McCarron since he was the offensive coordinator with the Bengals prior to taking over the Browns.

In fact, Brown said that Jackson was in the room with him while they tried to submit the documents in time to the league. “This is just a matter of getting to a deal too late in the process,” Brown said.

However, Jacksons’ coaching job is in peril and Bleacher Report said that it’s almost a certainty that the coach’s tenure with the Brown won’t be extended past this season. If Jackson was championing McCarron, that would make it awkward for the next coach that will replace him.

With that said, the article said that pulling out of any deal when a verbal agreement has been struck is not something that is done in the NFL. That means the rumor about Cleveland scuttling the deal with the Bengals may nothing more than pure speculation, it said.
