Bucaneers quarterback Jameis Winston has belied the accusation that he groped a female Uber driver in March last year, even the NFL has launched its own investigation into the incident.
In a statement, Winston said that he got wind of the report accusing him of committing a crime about a year ago. He said the alleged victim might have been confused about the number of passengers in the car and the person sitting next to her.
“The accusation is false, and given the nature of the allegation and increased awareness and consideration of these types of matters,” he said. “I am addressing this false report immediately.”
Winston said that he already called up Uber right after the allegation surfaced to deny what their driver said, but the company still suspended his account.
The victim told BuzzFeed News that she picked up Jameis outside a bar in Scottsdale, AZ around 2 a.m. of March 13. The athlete was helped by his friends to sit in the front seat. The Uber driver claimed that Jameis was screaming homophobic slurs at people. Her passenger then asked if they could go to a drive-thru at Los Betos Mexican Food.
They were waiting in line when Jameis reportedly grabbed her crotch for “three to five seconds.”
“I wasn’t just creeped out,” she claimed. “I was frozen. I mean he’s an NFL quarterback and I’m 5 ft 6. I’m not prepared for that.”
The woman said that there was only one passenger in the car and it was Winston.
Nevertheless, Brian McCarthy, spokesman of NFL, said that an investigation is already underway as the league reached out to Uber to share any information pertinent to the case. A letter was also sent to the alleged victim to shed some more information that can help with the investigation.
