The 33-year-old, who plays for Atletico Mineiro, and his accomplice were also ordered to pay the victim about $71,097 as damages. Four others were also found guilty for the same assault.

On his Instagram account, Robinho’s legal counsel issued a statement adding that he already defended himself against all the accusations. He insisted that “he had no participation in the episode.” “All legal steps are already being taken regarding this decision in the first instance,” the statement read.

According to multiple reports, the football player and a group of friends lured the woman at a nightclub in Milan, got him drunk before proceeding to rape her.

It wasn’t the first time Robinho (real name Robson de Souza) was accused of sexual assault. In 2009, the West Yorkshire Police received a report about a sexual assault that took place at the Space nightclub in Leeds on Jan. 4, 2009. “A file was submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service who decided that no further action should be taken,” the police statement said.

All is not lost for Robinho, however, as he can still raise his case to the appellate court, which is allowed in the Italian justice system, said ESPN. That means he won’t serve the sentence up until all appeals have been exhausted.

There’s also another issue of the extradition since Brazil typically don’t extradite its citizens.

Robinho was among the brightest Brazilian prospects after he signed with Real Madrid in 2005. Machester City then signed him for a British transfer record at that time for $43.2 million. The experiment did not last, however, as his struggled prompted the club to send him to Santos after just a year and a half.
