This Scientist Is Making A Floating Crypto Utopia In The Pacific

Estimated reading time:1 minute, 38 seconds

If you’re tired of your government and seeking a new, futuristic opportunity, maybe it’s time to set sails for the floating Pacific island powered by cryptocurrency!

Seemingly straight out of a science fiction novel, political scientists are experimenting with the idea of a floating, self-sustaining island that acts as its own ecosystem.

A Big Idea

Political scientist and researcher, Nathalie Mezza-Garcia, and companies like Blue Frontiers and Seasteading Institute are leading the way on a fantastical idea.

A self-proclaimed “seavangalesse”, Mezza-Garcia sees a manmade island as a viable option for people that are dissatisfied with their current government, refugees, or people simply seeking a change.

The French Polynesia government is in support of the project and will allow it to be built in their waters. The French Polynesia area was chosen for a significant ecological reason.

“This is the region where land is resting on coral and will disappear with rising sea levels,” Mezza-Garcia said.

The Plan To Build A Floating Island

The plan is to build 300 homes on the self-governed island and to use a cryptocurrency such as Varyon.

Governments will serve as service providers, but nothing more.

“If you don’t want to live under a particular government,” Mezza-Garcia said, “People will be able to just take their house and float away to another island.”

The Exciting Future Ahead

The project will cost roughly $50 million to complete and is estimated to be finished by 2022. It will be used as a benchmark for future projects similar to it.

“Once we can see how this first island works, we will have a proof of concept to plan for islands to house climate refugees,” she said.

Would you live on a floating island like this? It might seem pretty spacey, but it also could be a viable option for climate change and sea levels rising.
